ICAI, the Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence is founded by the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2018. ICAI labs form the core of ICAI. These labs are public-private collaborations between university and highly innovative industry, or with governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Together with partners, the Informatics Institute has set up the following ICAI labs.

The AI4Forensics Lab is a collaborative initiative of the Netherlands Forensic Institute and the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam. It focuses on developing new AI techniques for multimodal data in a forensically sound way.
Scientific directors are professor Marcel Worring, Multimedia Analytics  Lab (MultiX UvA) and professor Zeno Geradts (MultiX UvA & NFI).

The AI for Oncology lab is a collaboration between the Netherlands Cancer Institute and the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam. Both institutes join forces in the development of AI algorithms to improve cancer treatment.
Scientific directors are professor Clarisa Sánchez Gutiérrez, Quantitative Healthcare Analysis group (qurAI UvA) and Jan-Jakob Sonke (NKI).

The AI for Medical Imaging (AIM Lab) is a collaborative initiative of the Inception Institute of Artificial Intelligence from the United Arab Emirates (IIAI) and the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam. It focuses on using artificial intelligence for medical image recognition. Scientific directors are professor Cees Snoek, Video & Image Sense Lab (VIS UvA) and professor Marcel Worring, Multimedia Analytics  Lab (MultiX UvA).

The AI for Retail (AIR Lab) Amsterdam is a joint industry lab of Ahold Delhaize and the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam. It conducts es into socially responsible algorithms that can be used to make recommendations to consumers and into transparent AI technology for managing goods flows. The research takes place at Albert Heijn and bol.com, both brands of Ahold Delhaize.
Scientific directors are professor Maarten de Rijke and Evangelos Kanoulas both from the Information Retrieval Lab (IRLab UvA).

The Atlas Lab is a collaboration between ‘location technology specialist’ TomTom (TOM2) and the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam. It focuses on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for developing advanced, highly accurate and safe high definition (HD) maps for self-driving vehicles.
Scientific directors are professor Cees Snoek, Video & Image Sense Lab (VIS UvA) and professor Theo Gevers, Computer Vision group (CV UvA).

The CARA Lab is a collaboration between Abbott, Radboud University Medical Center, and Amsterdam University Medical Center and the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam. The lab research automated segmentation and characterization of intravascular structures and lesions, optimizing OCT-based algorithms to assess physiologic characteristics, high-risk plaque identification, and predicting stent-related complications, with the goal of increasing the usability, reliability, and applicability of intravascular OCT in interventional cardiology through the use of trustworthy AI.
Scientific directors are professors Ivana Išgum and Clarisa Sánchez Gutiérrez both from the Quantitative Healthcare Analysis group (qurAI UvA) & AMC and professor Niels van Royen & professor Bram van Ginneken (Radboudumc).

The Civic AI Lab is a collaboration between City of Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) and the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam. Civic AI Lab focuses on the application of artificial intelligence in the fields of education, welfare, environment, mobility and health.
Scientific directors are professors Sennay Ghebreab & Hinda Haned, both from Socially Intelligent  Artificial Systems (SIAS UvA) and professor Jacco van Ossenbruggen (VU).

Deep Learning Technologies Amsterdam (DELTA Lab 2) is a collaboration between Bosch and the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam. The mission is to perform world class research in machine learning and computer vision. Scientific directors are professor Theo Gevers, Computer Vision group (CV UvA) and dr. Jan-Willem van de Meent, Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab (AMLab UvA).

Discovery Lab is a collaboration between the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam and Elsevier. The lab’s philosophy is to drive scientific discovery using machine intelligence. Scientific directors are professor Paul Groth, INtelligent Data Engineering Lab (INDElab UvA) and professor Frank van Harmelen (VU) and Rinke Hoekstra (Elsevier).

The Mercury Machine Learning Lab is a collaboration between the Informatics Institute of the University of Amsterdam, Delft University of Technology and Booking.com. The lab focuses on the development and applications of artificial intelligence to the specific domain of online travel booking and recommendation service systems. The Information Retrieval Lab (IRLab UvA) is involved.
Scientific directors are Joris Mooij (Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics UvA ), associate professor Frans Oliehoek (TUD), associate professor Matthijs Spaan (TUD) and industry director Onno Zoeter (Booking.com).

The National Police Lab AI is a collaborative initiative of the Dutch Police, Utrecht University, University of Amsterdam (UNTIL SEPT 2024) and Delft University of Technology.
