Research themes

The mission of the Informatics Institute is to perform curiosity-driven and use-inspired fundamental research and to train talent by high-quality academic education in diverse areas of informatics.

Our research involves complex information systems focusing on collaborative, data driven, computational and intelligent systems.

The Informatics Institute has clustered its research in five recognisable research themes: Artificial Intelligence; Computational Science; Data Science; People, Science & Technology and Systems and Networking. Groups or individual researchers within groups position themselves, either in one theme but more often on the intersection of two or more themes.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The Artificial intelligence theme focuses on research on machine learning methods, theory and algorithms across multiple modalities (like text, images and video) and research on how AI can best benefit society.
Computational Science (CS)

The Computational Science theme focuses on research on advanced computing capabilities to understand and solve complex problems by developing theory, computational models and analysing them in data driven simulations.
Data Science (DS)

The Data Science theme focuses on research on systems and methods for managing, obtaining insights and acting on data.
People, Science and Technology (PST)

PST theme focuses on understand and influence the impact of digital technologies on our society by attempting to understand social complexity and using the knowledge of both the social sciences and computer science.
Systems and Networking (S&N)

The Systems and Networking theme focuses on research on future computer systems of all scales from global-scale systems and networks to embedded and IoT devices.
