The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded two IvI researchers of the Informatics Institute: Fernando Pascoal dos Santos and Vlad Niculae.

Fernando Pascoal dos Santos of the Socially Intelligent Articifical Systems (SIAS) has received a VIDI grant of €850,000 for his research proposal entitled ‘Prosocial Adaptation to Transparent Algorithms’.

Prosocial Adaptation to Transparent Algorithms

Artificial Intelligence is nowadays used in decisions severely affecting people’s lives, in domains such as fraud detection, content moderation, or hiring. These algorithms should be transparent, enabling individuals to understand how decisions are made and to adapt accordingly. There are however differences in how individuals adapt: they can genuinely improve or correct mistakes, which is desirable (i.e., prosocial adaptation); or exploit the algorithms without necessarily improving their own condition (i.e., malicious adaptation). Dos Santos’ project will investigate the dynamics of human-AI co-evolution and develop tools to incentivise individuals’ prosocial adaptation to algorithms, allowing AI algorithms to be both transparent and robust.

VIDI grant

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded Vidi grants to 10 talented researchers from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Amsterdam UMC (AMC location). The Vidi funding amounts to a maximum of €850,000 per project. This will allow the researchers to develop their own research line and establish or further expand their own research groups.
