On Thursday 16 April, Princess Amalia of Orange and Mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema, visited LAB42 as part of an introductory visit to the city of Amsterdam. At the Science Park, the theme was Amsterdam Tech City, with a special focus on AI and sustainable solar energy.

Their first stop at LAB42 was the Intelligent Robotics Lab for an introduction in robotics. Bachelor's student in Artificial Intelligence, Dário Catarrinho and his teammates from whIRLwind Amsterdam, let two teams of the new humanoid robots compete. They demonstrated the kicking technique that they developed for their competitions. The Princess wondered if at these competitions there are also issues with aggressive behaviour towards referees. Safe in the knowledge that any possible aggression would be ‘very mild’, the delegation continued their tour for an AI experience.

Professor Cees Snoek and PhD candidates Mohammad Mahdi Derakhshani and Dheeraj Varghese presented their project NeoBabel, an inclusive AI image generator for non-English speakers. It sparked questions about safeguards from Princess Amalia and a moment of reflection on the necessity of inclusiveness in AI for the mayor.

I’m happy to have presented our work not just to Princess Amalia, but also to the Mayor of Amsterdam. It was a great opportunity to showcase IvI and Amsterdam Science Park as the AI hub of the Netherlands.

Before continuing the tour of Amsterdam Science Park at AMOLF, the Princess and the Mayor, sat down for a roundtable discussion on today’s and tomorrow’s technological challenges with researchers, societal partners and industry, among them, Max Welling.
