19 December marked the official opening of the User Interaction Lab (UIL), part of the Digital Interactions Lab (DIL) at the Informatics Institute in LAB42. The opening event brought together staff, students, and guests to celebrate this new facility dedicated to human-centred technology and education.

The afternoon featured remarks by Dr Jacobijn Sandberg, an emeritus faculty member of IvI, who had the original vision for the lab, Prof. Marcel Vreeselijk, Vic-Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Prof. Judith Good, Director of the User Interaction Lab. Their remarks highlighted the importance of the UIL for education and research, as well as the collaborative effort behind its creation.

Hands-on, experiential learning

During the opening, visitors explored the interactive Overwhelm exhibit, saw demonstrations of new technologies, and engaged in informal discussions over drinks. These activities showcased the lab’s focus on hands-on, experiential learning and meaningful interaction with technology.

A state-of-the-art learning environment

The User Interaction Lab is designed to give students access to state-of-the-art tools, including eye trackers, health trackers, and advanced audio and video recording equipment. In addition to state-of-the-art technologies, the lab provides a dedicated space for project-based learning, where students can experiment, reflect, and develop practical skills.

Embedding human‑centred computing in the curriculum

The UIL plays a central role in the Informatics Institute’s educational vision. At the Bachelor’s level, the Informatiekunde programme is being refocused as Mensgerichte Informatica (Human-Centred Computing). At the Master’s level, a new Human-Computer Interaction track within Information Studies further strengthens this emphasis. The lab is already an integral part of courses such as the Data Systems Project.

Empowering responsible technology design

Above all, the User Interaction Lab aims to empower students, not only to build technology, but to do so in a responsible, creative, and inclusive way. With its opening, the UIL marks an important step in preparing students to design technologies that genuinely serve people and society.
