The Queer and Feminist Informatics Network (QFIN) officially launched on 25 November with a well-attended inaugural event at LAB42. QFIN is designed as an open, collaborative community for academics, researchers, students, and professionals who are interested in the social, political, and cultural dimensions of computing. The network aims to provide a supportive environment in which critical discussions, interdisciplinary exchanges, and shared initiatives can thrive. QFIN was founded by IvI members Dr. Siân Brooke, Dr. Delfina Martinez Pandiani, Maria Mlocka and Mae Sosto from CWI.

The launch event exceeded all expectations. More than twice the number of registered attendees joined in person, filling the room and demonstrating the strong interest in creating spaces where queer and feminist perspectives can meaningfully intersect with computing and information sciences. Discussion sparked by Trans Technologies

The first event featured the book Trans Technologies by Oliver Haimson. It prompted a wide-ranging discussion on online safety, identity-related design practices, and the importance of inclusive research. The level of engagement confirmed the need for spaces where people can connect across roles and disciplines, share experiences, and work together to rethink informatics from queer and feminist perspectives.

Formal launch in 2026

Following the success of the inaugural meeting, QFIN is preparing a larger, formal launch event at the Informatics Institute in the new year. The event will outline plans for future activities, including talks, reading groups, workshops, and cross-institute collaborations.
