The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded 2.3 million to a new research initiative on artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. The ELSA Lab, led by the UvA, investigates how AI can be developed fairly and inclusively, with a particular focus on underrepresented groups in healthcare.

The large-scale use of health data and advancements in medical AI offers potential to improve the efficiency and quality of healthcare. However, concerns about health equity persist, as AI algorithms have shown biases against marginalized groups, including those based on race, gender, and socioeconomic status. The European Union is implementing new regulations addressing these disparities and promoting ethical AI development, though challenges in ensuring fairness and legal compliance remain. The ELSA Lab AI for Health Equity researches how AI systems can be developed and deployed equitably, working with AI developers, societal partners, and citizens to create guidelines, methods, and recommendations.
