Hardware Security: Lightweight Cryptography and Hardware Trojans

Are you sure that your system is secure if you do not secure the hardware? Do you know that attacks can be carried out also in the hardware supply chain? Do you want to secure the next generation of IoT and implantable devices? It is well recognized that hardware is the root of trust: ensuring the security of the underlying hardware it the first step for building secure systems. This 1-day masterclass covers two main challenges of hardware security. The first part of the course will cover lightweight cryptography, which addresses the problem of ensuring robust security also in constrained devices such as IoT devices. The second part of the course will be focused on hardware trojans, which is the major security treat of the electronic supply chain.

Two Main Challenges of Hardware Security

Hardware is the root of trust, where the security of all the layers above is anchored. The pervasive diffusion of electronic systems in every aspects of our lives posed new challenges to hardware designers. Among them, there is certainly the need of embed robust security primitives everywhere, also in devices with extremely limited area, energy and power budgets. This challenge is addressed by the so called lightweight cryptography. Ensure robust cryptography is not sufficient to guarantee security, since the security of robust devices can also be altered also during their production by adversaries that are able to insert hardware trojans. In this course, you will gain in depth knowledge about lightweight cryptography and hardware trojans.

  • Lecturer: Dr. Francesco Regazzoni

    Dr. Francesco Regazzoni received his Master of Science degree from Politecnico di Milano and his PhD degree from Università della Svizzera italiana.  He held research positions at the Université Catholique de Louvain and at Technical University of Delft, and has been visiting researcher at several institutions, including NEC Labs America, Ruhr University of Bochum, and EPFL Lausanne and NTU Singapore.

    His research interests are mainly focused on secure IoT devices and embedded systems, covering in particular design automation for security, physical attacks and countermeasures, post-quantum cryptography, and efficient implementation of cryptographic primitives.
