Through the Accelerate Programme, the DSC has awarded funding for six proposals at the Faculty of Science. Within the Informatics Institute (IvI), the DSC has awarded funding for an Assistant Professor to initiate a collaboration between the Complex Cyber Infrastructure group and the Intelligent Data Engineering lab on data management methods.

The aim of this collaboration is to establish an overarching methodology that brings together techniques and technologies for data-related tasks, relying on fundamental principles of data management, system design and security. The systematic acquisition and management of research data involves many nontrivial and challenging tasks such as preparing data for analysis, making data available for reuse and replication, transforming data for new applications, and publishing data. Throughout these processes, the provenance of data and the privacy of data subjects is to be maintained. The research will lead to integrated techniques and technologies that serve different stakeholders, reducing their efforts, streamlining the processes, and increasing control and accountability. The proposed research directly benefits the DSC and the various faculties partaking in the Accelerate Programme.

The assistant professor will:

  1. Confer with data scientists and data stewards from various research groups and disciplines to identify common challenges related to all aspects of data management.
  2. Initiate and pursue collaborations with colleagues from the Complex Cyber Infrastructure group and the Intelligent Data Engineering lab to address the identified challenges.
  3. Establish a comprehensive methodology by bringing together existing and novel techniques within the fields of workflow languages, data science, and data management.
  4. Seek out partnerships to bring the established methodology to practice in a software system.

The DSC aims to enhance the university’s research by developing, sharing and applying data science methods and technologies. Through its Accelerate Programme, the DSC will support faculties as they pursue data driven research and stimulate the hiring of data scientists and engineers. The programme is not only intended to facilitate knowledge exchange throughout the university, but also incentivise the integration of these roles into existing research activity.
