Amirhossein Habibian, PhD student at the Informatics Institute, is elected as the best Iranian engineering student in Europe. The prize is awarded yearly by the Iranian government to reward academic excellence among Iranian students in Europe studying medicine, humanities, science, art and engineering. For each branch of science five students are elected based on their research and educational profile. Amirhossein Habibian ranked first among the engineering students and will receive a diploma and a prize.
Amirhossein Habibian studies complex event recognition in digital video. Digital videos are everywhere. Hence, making sense of video data offers a wealth of opportunities for science, for professionals, and for businesses. The scientific challenge is to understand what happens where in the video content automatically.
Amirhossein studies new algorithms that project the pixels of thousands of web videos and their faulty user-provided descriptions into an intermediate multimedia representation, which is exploited for an innovative video search engine. The search engine allows automatically recognizing and retrieving videos containing events like “birthday party“, “flash mob gathering” and “rock climbing” from a handful of examples.
Moreover, it is capable to automatically translate any video into a set of keywords best describing the video content, in effect making digital video as searchable as text. Recently he also received the best paper award at the 2014 edition of the ACM International Conference on Multimedia.
