Prof Paul Groth, professor Algorithmic Data Science

Paul Groth’s research focuses on intelligent systems that support people in their work with data and information from diverse sources. Data is increasingly at the centre of society. Whether it is a doctor trying to make sense of the latest research for a patient, a journalist trying to gain an accurate view of opinion from hundreds of sources, or a data scientist trying to build the next generation of recommender systems, there is a fundamental need for support in assembling, integrating and judging data.

As professor at the UvA, Groth will carry out research into methods and systems for the integration and reuse of data. He will also continue his work on methods for determining the provenance of data, making the origins of datasets more transparent and understandable.  These themes will also be the focus of the new Intelligent Data Engineering Lab (INDE Lab),which Groth will lead. 

In addition to conducting and leading research, Groth will teach students within the Data Science track of the Master’s programme in Information Studies

About Paul Groth 

From 2015 to 2018, Groth was Disruptive Technology Director at Elsevier Labs. Between 2009 and 2015, he was affiliated with the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), first as a postdoctoral researcher and later as assistant professor. He has done research at the University of Southern California. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Southampton in 2007.

Groth has led a number of major international efforts, including as co-chair of the W3C Provenance Working Group that led to an international standard for data provenance interchange and as lead architect of the Innovative Medicines Initiative’s 29-member Open PHACTS project, which developed data platforms to lower the barriers of drug discovery. He is a member of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI).

Groth has authored and edited several scientific books and has published extensively in leading international peer-reviewed journals and conferences, includingthe World Wide Web Conference, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, Communications of the ACM, and Scientific Data
