Zeno Geradts is specialised in digital forensic research. Focusing in particular on methods of extracting data from digital data carriers during or after the perpetration of an offence, his work will link the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) and the UvA's Informatics Institute. Crucial in this research is ascertaining which type of evidence about an offence can be obtained from the data. Ultimately, the aim is to develop sound methodologies and solutions for processing large quantities of data and for assessing their evidential value (in the form of a probability ratio), taking account of different hypotheses and scenarios, thereby boosting the efficiency and quality of forensic data research.

Having worked as a forensic scientist at the NFI since 1992, Geradts is currently based in its Digital Technology and Biometry Department, where he is involved in image processing, camera identification and biometry. Geradts coordinates the R&D for various digital evidence projects and leads the Big Data and Cyber Forensics innovation programme. He is chair of the Forensic IT working group of the European Network of Forensic Sciences Institutes and from 2010 to 2013 was director of the Digital Evidence and Multimedia Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. In July 2014, the Academy nominated him as its vice-president.
