FameLab: Pitch your research!

10 January 2019

Are you a PhD student or postdoc, between 21 - 40 years old, and would you like to learn how to explain your research to a general public ... in just three minutes? Join FameLab!

Being able to explain clearly what your research is about is increasingly an important skill for scientists. It can, for example, help you when you apply for grants, and many grant organizations nowadays ask that you disseminate the results of your research to the general public. Also, positive media attention can give your career as a researcher a nice boost.

Take on the challenge

FameLab is an international competition for young scientists interested in science communication, co-organized by the UvA's Faculty of Science and the UvA AMC.

Three minutes. No slides. Only science. Participants present their research to a professional jury of members  who are experienced in science communication. These jury members select the best participants on the basis of the 3 FameLab criteria: content, clarity and charisma. Local winners can go to the national final in Tivoli Vredenburg, Utrecht, and the national winner is invited for the FameLab final at the Cheltenham Science Festival in England.

The preliminaries & local final

When you sign up for FameLab you will be invited for a first training and for the local preliminaries. Preliminary rounds will be held at the UvA Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine AMC-UVA. During the first training you learn the basics of giving a good presentation to the general public.

Depending on the number of participants, the performance during this preparatory training can be used to select who will move on the next round. In the Amsterdam final there is room for 8 participants from the Faculty of Science and 8 participants from the AMC. Prior to the Amsterdam final there will be a second training, to further improve your pitch.

The Amsterdam final will take place on Wednesday 13 March in SPUI25, a location in the heart of the city. This evening is open to the public. So here you can see how people from the general audience your pitch! The winner of the Amsterdam final is invited to the national final on May 9, 2019 in Utrecht.
