Arnold Smeulders and Rajamani Krishna in Elsevier’s list of most cited researchers
Professors Arnold Smeulders (UvA Informatics Institute) and Rajamani Krishna (UvA-HIMS) rank amongst the 300 most cited researchers in their field, according to the recently released Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subject. The ranking, developed by Elsevier, lists scientists in seven engineering-related subjects.
Arnold Smeulders of the Institute of Informatics appears in the subject list of Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Rajamani Krishna, professor at the Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences, is among the most cited researchers in the fields of both Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. Next to the two Faculty of Science researchers Loet Leydesdorff (Amsterdam School of Communications Research) is also in the list of Computer Science and Engineering.
In a special foreword Dr Jan Sadlak, president of the IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence, stresses the importance of subject and discipline related rankings. Sadlak: ‘While institutional rankings represent a principle object of national, regional and international rankings, it becomes evident that there are reasons for ‘subject and discipline related rankings’.
The ranking indicators included measures of research productivity, research with high quality, research with top quality, average global research impact, extent of international collaboration, extent of academic-corporation collaboration, researchers with global academic influences, and academic awards.
