Amsterdam Data Science receives AAA funding
Amsterdam Data Science has received an investment from the Amsterdam Academic Alliance (AAA) following a decision by the Executive Boards of VU University Amsterdam (VU) and the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
On 19 February the boards approved an application for funding for Data Science from the AAA Fund. The joint science faculties of VU and the UvA will be receiving an annual amount of €1,023,000 for Data Science over the years 2015, 2016 and 2017.
According to the assessment committee, the programme application ‘Sets out a positive and vital initiative that will build on existing UvA-VU collaborations and forge the necessary connections between various disciplines that are each studying the emerging phenomenon of large datasets from their own perspectives’. The committee went on to laud the application's proposals for concrete projects and associated postdoc appointments.
About Amsterdam Data Science
Amsterdam Data Science is a network organisation established in 2013 whose members include the UvA, VU, the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) and the CWI national research institute for mathematics and computer science in the Netherlands. The organisation was set up to facilitate collaboration in research and in efforts to raise funds and to promote the valorisation of research and education in this field, as reflected in its involvement in 13 Master's programmes.
Amsterdam Data Science provides a network in which some 300 Amsterdam-based scientists exchange knowledge and forge partnerships within and outside the academic community. As Director Maarten de Rijke stated in an earlier interview: ‘Data science is quite simply the science of data and centres on extracting meaning, reasoning, searchability, visualisation, acting intelligently and informing. A data scientist looks at a type of data and tries to find patterns.’
Although data science is relatively new, it is rooted in older disciplines such as machine learning and data mining, as well as in more general scientific disciplines such as computing science and statistics. In recent years the amount of data and computing power has increased exponentially to enable all those disciplines to work in a concerted manner.
About the Amsterdam Academic Alliance
The Amsterdam Academic Alliance (AAA) is a joint initiative of the two Amsterdam-based universities – VU and the UvA – aimed at intensifying collaboration with each other and with other knowledge institutions in the region. The objective of the AAA is to cement Amsterdam's position as a major international player and hub of academic excellence. The alliance is to result in different outcomes in each scientific field.
