Korteweg medal for Arnold Smeulders

Het Genootschap ter bevordering van Natuur-, Genees- en Heelkunde awarded for the first time the Korteweg medal to computer scientist Arnold Smeulders.

Smeulders receives the medal for his excellent and influential contributions to image analysis and image recognition.

The Korteweg medal has been established by the Society to honor outstanding achievements in mathematics and computer science. Diederik Johannes Korteweg (1848-1941) was the first PhD student at the University of Amsterdam.
